An Alpine Säntis Wedding

If you have been dreaming of a mountain wedding with wide alpine views, accessible summits and comfort, this hotel in the Swiss Alps might be the one for you.

Set directly at the base station of the Säntis cable car on the Schwägalp plateau, with a view of the limestone face of the Säntis and direct access to the 2502-metre summit, it is the kind of place that feels like a well-kept secret in Eastern Switzerland – and yet it offers everything you need for a relaxed yet elevated celebration.

Whether you are planning an intimate elopement or a weekend-long mountain wedding in Switzerland with your closest friends and family, the Hotel Säntis blends the beauty of the Swiss Alps with modern alpine hospitality.

With panoramic windows, a sun-drenched terrace for apéro hour, and the quiet of the Schwägalp as your soundtrack, it is the ideal setting for couples who want to step away from the conventional.

Why couples love a wedding on Säntis

Getting married on the highest peak of the Alpstein is an adventure by itself. You can take the cable car up – and at the top, you have the Alps and the lake spread out around you. That’s where the ceremony happens. After, there’s time for an apero, a walk along the ridge, and then back down to the hotel – modern and comfortable – for the rest of the celebration.

Especially popular with:

  • Couples planning small, intentional weddings – the kind who would rather say their vows on a mountaintop than in a ballroom. They value connection over tradition and appreciate a place that gives them room to breathe – a quiet morning getting ready with the Säntis right outside the window, or an evening apéro on the terrace with just a handful of people they love.
  • Nature lovers and adventurous travellers –couples drawn to mountains, fresh air and the kind of setting that feels beautiful without trying too hard. The hotel sits directly in the landscape, not just next to it. For couples who want wildflowers instead of arrangements and a hike as part of the day – this is that place.
  • Couples planning multi-day destination weddings – the Schwägalp is made for a full wedding weekend. Guests arrive, check in, and don’t need to go anywhere. There’s the spa, the cable car, alpine hikes, Appenzell dinners. The wedding becomes less of a single day and more of a few days together in the mountains – which is often exactly what people actually wanted all along.

What couples love about a Säntis wedding

What couples rave about most is the atmosphere at a Appenzell wedding: peaceful, personal and quietly impressive without being staged. The summit terrace is stunning – many couples say the cable car ride with their guests is when the day really starts. Framed by the limestone walls of the Alpstein and the wide horizon of Eastern Switzerland, it is a ceremony spot that does not need decoration to feel special.

The hotel staff is often described as warm, discreet and genuinely invested in making every part of the day feel right. With a kitchen that draws on local Appenzell produce and seasonal alpine dishes, even the food feels rooted in the place.

Most couples who come here say the same thing afterwards – that it felt less like a wedding venue and more like their own corner of the Alps for a few days. That is probably the best way to describe it.

From a Photographer’s Perspective

If you have been dreaming of a wedding with mountain views, soft alpine light and a quiet, grounded atmosphere, the Hotel Säntis is one of the most photogenic venues in the Swiss Alps.

Located directly at the base of the Säntis cable car on the Schwägalp, with direct access to the 2,502-metre summit, it offers everything a photographer needs – wide panoramas, quick weather changes, soft mountain light and a setting that simply does not exist down in the valley.

Light & Timing

One of the standout features here is the light. The morning light on the Schwägalp is soft and often filtered through mist – ideal for editorial-style getting-ready shots. By late afternoon, the sun moves across the Säntis face and casts warm tones across the meadows, perfect for golden hour portraits.

If you want a summit ceremony, I always recommend checking the cable car schedule well in advance. The last regular descent is often before the best sunset light. Many couples solve this by booking a private charter or by adding an after-wedding shoot the following day, which is the cleanest way to capture the summit in the most beautiful light without any pressure on the wedding day.

Photo Opportunities at Hotel Säntis

As a wedding photographer who has worked at this venue many times, I can honestly say it is a dream. The ever-changing alpine light, the limestone textures and the open mountain views make it one of the most photogenic places to get married in Switzerland. Here are a few of my favourite spots to capture images at the Säntis throughout the day.

The Hotel Säntis

With its warm wood tones, generous windows and direct mountain views, the hotel works beautifully for getting-ready images, candid moments and a full alternative location on windy days when the cable car cannot operate.

The Schwägalp

Whether you are walking through alpine meadows in summer or pausing for a quiet moment with the Säntis face above you, the Schwägalp offers natural, storytelling images in every season.

The Surroundings

The Säntis is surrounded by rock faces, snow fields, alpine meadows and viewpoints — depending on the season and the weather. It’s exactly this variety that makes the area around the summit so compelling to photograph.

A few insider tips…

  • If you are hoping for drone footage or wide aerial shots, check wind speeds and clearances early – the Säntis is in regulated airspace and needs approval from the cable car operator.
  • Bring warm layers for the summit at a wedding on Säntis, even in summer. At 2,502 metres, temperatures can be 15 degrees cooler than in the valley – a cape, a wrap or a tailored alpine coat makes a real difference for portraits.
  • I always scout the forecast and build a loose timeline around the light – even on overcast or foggy days, the mood here is cinematic, especially when the summit sits above a sea of clouds.
