Light & Timing

One of the standout features here is the light. The morning light on the Schwägalp is soft and often filtered through mist – ideal for editorial-style getting-ready shots. By late afternoon, the sun moves across the Säntis face and casts warm tones across the meadows, perfect for golden hour portraits.

If you want a summit ceremony, I always recommend checking the cable car schedule well in advance. The last regular descent is often before the best sunset light. Many couples solve this by booking a private charter or by adding an after-wedding shoot the following day, which is the cleanest way to capture the summit in the most beautiful light without any pressure on the wedding day.

  • If you are hoping for drone footage or wide aerial shots, check wind speeds and clearances early – the Säntis is in regulated airspace and needs approval from the cable car operator.
  • Bring warm layers for the summit at a wedding on Säntis, even in summer. At 2,502 metres, temperatures can be 15 degrees cooler than in the valley – a cape, a wrap or a tailored alpine coat makes a real difference for portraits.

  • What is the best month to have a wedding on Säntis?

    September is our favourite. The light is clear, the temperatures are mild and the alpine colours are at their richest. Summer months (July and August) are also strong but more touristic on the summit. Spring arrives late on the Säntis – we do not recommend dates before mid-June. Winter is possible for small weddings and elopements that spend most of the day at the hotel.

  • Can you legally marry there at the Säntis summit?

    Swiss law requires the civil ceremony to take place at an official registry office in the valley. Most couples handle the legal step one or two days before the wedding at a registry office of their choice, then hold a symbolic ceremony at the Säntis summit. This is the standard and most flexible approach for destination wedding in Switzerland.

  • Does the Hotel Säntis allow drones?

    Drone flights at the Säntis require clearance because the area is in regulated airspace and close to the cable car operations. Permission must be requested through the Säntis cable car company well in advance. Allow at least three months for the approval process and book an experienced drone pilot who has worked here before.

  • Do we need a second shooter for this venue?

    For elopements and small weddings of up to 30 guests, a single photographer is usually enough. For larger weddings, parallel preparations or tight timelines that include a summit ceremony, a second photographer makes the day smoother. We discuss this individually during the planning call.

  • What’s the best location for golden hour?

    The summit terrace facing west delivers the strongest golden hour panoramas, with the Swiss Alps glowing in warm light. The Schwägalp meadows also work very well, especially when the last sun catches the Säntis face. The challenge is timing – the last regular cable car descent is often before the actual golden hour, which is why we often recommend a separate after-wedding shoot to capture this light without any pressure.

  • Can we have photos taken at the summit?

    Yes. Several viewing platforms and panoramic terraces are available at 2502 metres. In poor weather, the summit building itself offers indoor alternatives with panoramic windows. We plan timing and exact locations together on the day based on wind and light conditions.
