Säntis wedding: our view as wedding photographers

At 2’502 m, the Säntis is the highest peak of the Alpstein – and one of the few mountains in Switzerland that combine a hotel, a mountain chapel, a banquet hall, a summit restaurant and a modern cable car. Down on the Schwägalp you will find Säntis – das Hotel and the little Bruder-Klaus-Kapelle; up on the summit, reachable again from 2027, the Churfirstenblick hall for a symbolic ceremony and the summit terraces. On the Säntis you can marry privately, just the two of you, or with 120 guests.

We are Chris and Alina from Alpstein Fotograf, at home in Eastern Switzerland – and on the Säntis more often than on any other mountain. The Säntisbahn, the cable car company, lists us as photographers in its wedding brochure, and our pictures hang in the valley station.

This guide is our view of a wedding on the Säntis: where you can marry, when the light is right and how your wedding day might unfold. For prices, rooms and menus, the Säntis event team are the right people to talk to – we take care of the pictures.

You will find other places for your wedding in our Appenzell elopement guide, and venues across the whole of Switzerland in our Switzerland elopement guide.

Why we love the Säntis

  • The view. A glorious sea of fog, the view across to the Altmann, the sunset over the Toggenburg – no other mountain in Eastern Switzerland has a view to match the Säntis.
  • Everything in one place. Chapel, banquet hall and 68 rooms are just a few minutes’ walk apart – no driving back and forth between the ceremony and the party.
  • Modern cable car, from 2027. Ten minutes up by cable car, apéro and ceremony at 2’502 m, the party down in the valley.

At a glance

  • Altitude: Schwägalp 1’350 m, summit 2’502 m, Appenzell Ausserrhoden
  • Ceremony: civil ceremony in the valley (Herisau or Urnäsch), church wedding in the Bergkapelle, symbolic ceremony on the chapel forecourt, in front of the hotel or, from 2027, on the summit
  • Guests: from just the two of you to around 120 at the banquet in the hotel
  • Our favourite month: September; in winter, December with the Laternliweg (lantern trail)

Säntis 2026 / 2027

  • Cable car: being rebuilt, out of service until late autumn 2026, opening in spring 2027
  • 2026: weddings on the Schwägalp – chapel, hotel and banquet hall are open
  • 2027: the summit is added to the list; the full-moon evenings and the Schwinget (Swiss wrestling festival) on 15 August are already taken

Säntis 2026 or 2027?

In 2027 a new cable car will run up to the Säntis summit: The Säntis cable car is being rebuilt and is out of service until late autumn 2026. The first rides are planned for late autumn 2026, and 24 December 2026 is already in the timetable; the official opening follows in spring 2027. The hotel, the restaurants and the mountain chapel on the Schwägalp are open.

As before, the new cable car carries 85 people per cabin and has been built to cope better with wind. If you really want to marry on a summit in 2026: Hoher Kasten, Ebenalp or Staubern – all in the Appenzell guide.

The venues: Säntis – das Hotel, mountain chapel and summit

Säntis – das Hotel, Schwägalp

Säntis – das Hotel is the starting point for most weddings. Plenty of space, window light, modern rooms and only a few minutes’ walk to the cable car or the chapel.

In the evening, the Festsaal Hungbühl has room for a banquet of 120 guests plus a dance floor – enough space for your party. Smaller celebrations are possible in the Schwingerstube, furnished in Appenzell style. 68 rooms, a spa and breakfast with a view of the Säntis north face. The whole wedding party stays on the mountain. The event team will advise you on wedding packages, rooms and prices.

Bergkapelle Schwägalp

The Bergkapelle Schwägalp, the mountain chapel (officially the Bruder-Klaus-Kapelle), is ecumenical, seats around 80 (up to 100 people) and has no minimum number of guests. You choose the time of the ceremony, the minister, the organist and the decorations yourselves. The large forecourt with the Säntis as a backdrop is one of our favourite places for your group photos and for a symbolic ceremony. Bookings go directly through the sacristans, Frida and Alois Krapf, +41 71 983 15 18; the chapel relies on donations.

Summit, from 2027

The Churfirstenblick hall, with its view into the Toggenburg, is the room for a symbolic ceremony and the apéro on the summit. The viewing terraces on several levels are the perfect spots for your couple portraits – on the north side the wide view across Lake Constance, or on the east side towards the Altmann and the Alpstein for the last light. Our advice: apéro up top, dinner down at the hotel, with the ride down in the evening light. Rides outside the timetable are booked as extra rides with the event team.

Säntis wedding for two: a symbolic ceremony on the viewing platform of the Säntis (before the cable car renewal in 2026).

Civil ceremony, church wedding or symbolic ceremony

There is no official registry room on the Schwägalp or on the summit. The civil ceremony takes place down in the valley, at the Zivilstandsamt Hinterland (registry office) in Herisau or in the council chamber in Urnäsch, on a weekday. A church wedding or blessing is possible in the Bergkapelle Schwägalp; a symbolic ceremony can take place on the chapel forecourt, in front of the hotel or, from 2027, on the summit. From a photographer’s point of view, a symbolic ceremony (not legally binding) is the most beautiful option, because you choose the hour and the light.

Three ways to plan your wedding on the Säntis:

  1. Civil ceremony in Urnäsch or Herisau the day before or on the morning itself, then the chapel or a symbolic ceremony on the Schwägalp or on the summit – the most common route.
  2. Civil ceremony at home weeks beforehand, then just the ceremony and the party on the Säntis – the option for couples travelling from further afield.
  3. Just the two of you, purely symbolic, with a night at the hotel or as a pre-wedding shoot ahead of your wedding at home – no registry office, no chapel.

You sort out dates, deadlines and documents directly with the Zivilstandsamt Hinterland (+41 71 354 54 49); for couples from abroad, the essentials are in our Switzerland elopement guide. Celebrants the Säntis works with: Zeremonie des Lebens (Maja Lüscher) and edel und weiss momente (Sandra Vetsch-Bischofberger).

Light and the seasons on the Säntis

The Säntis makes its own weather: snow can fall in any month, and yet the summit stands in sunshine surprisingly often while fog lies in the valleys below. What we know from many days up there: from October to December the chance of a sea of fog is greatest, in summer the clouds roll in during the afternoon, and October is the driest month. The best light comes in the two hours after sunrise and before sunset – the midday sun at 2’500 m is harsh. Expect it to be ten degrees colder at the top than in the valley; pack a coat for the couple portraits, even in July.

Weather and plan B

Wind remains the risk: in a storm the cable car stops running. That is why every Säntis day should have two versions: the ceremony on the summit, or down in the valley in either the chapel or the hall at the hotel.

Winter wedding on the Schwägalp. From the end of November to the end of February the Laternliweg (lantern trail) is lit every Thursday, Friday and Saturday from 16:00 on the Schwägalp – snow, a groomed winter walking trail lined with lanterns and the Säntis north face in the last light behind you are our favourite photo backdrop. Fondue is available with a reservation at the Restaurant Schwägalp or the Gasthaus Passhöhe; the road is kept clear. Perfect for a pre-wedding shoot too.

Sunrise and full moon, from 2027. Before the rebuild there were sunrise rides on Sundays in July and August and full-moon rides with dinner at the top throughout the year – pictures you will find nowhere else in the Alpstein. The full-moon evenings for 2027 are back in the calendar; whether the sunrise rides return is something the two of you will need to check with the event team. (As of September 2026)

Getting to the Säntis

  • By car: Zurich 1 h 20 min, St. Gallen 40 min, Zurich Airport around 1 h 30 min; parking at the valley station, including for wedding coaches.
  • Without a car: train to Urnäsch or Nesslau, then the PostBus to the valley station – groups of 10 or more should reserve two working days in advance.
  • Cable car from 2027: 85 people per cabin, around 10 minutes – 120 guests means two rides, so allow half an hour for everyone. You book extra rides through the event team.
  • For your guests: the spa at the hotel, the Alpschaukäserei (show dairy) at the valley station, the Laternliweg (lantern trail) in winter; day trips in our Appenzell photo spots guide.

Marrying at home and dreaming of pictures in the Alps? Many couples from Asia fly in for exactly this – often in their wedding attire, months before the big day at home. A pre-wedding shoot at sunrise on the Säntis summit, possible again from 2027, is something very special (Mini Elopement package – 4 hours including a hike or the ride up – CHF 1’850); or on the Schwägalp at sunset, with the Säntis north face behind you. Alpine meadows in summer, the Laternliweg (lantern trail) in winter. (Couple Portraits, 1 hour at one spot, CHF 480 – ask for a date.)
